RTÉ’s latest podcast series Where is Jón? has reached the number 1 spot on both Spotify and Apple podcast charts in Ireland and in Iceland. With four episodes released so far, the series has been the fastest ever growing podcast series for RTÉ.
On the morning of February 9th 2019, 41 year old Icelander, Jón Jónsson left the Bonnington hotel in Dublin, turned right onto a busy road, lit a cigarette and vanished. Over the following years, Jón’s family occasionally returned to Ireland but Jón’s story slipped from the limelight despite his family never giving up hope that they’d one day discover what happened to Jón.
18 months ago, the public broadcasters of RÚV (Iceland) and RTÉ (Ireland) came together to investigate Jón’s story. With exclusive access to Jón’s family and others involved in this story, they’ve made every attempt to unearth new information.
Co-producer Liam O’Brien said "We're very happy to see listeners, especially in Ireland and Iceland, really engaging in the series - and topping the podcast charts in both countries is a strong indicator audiences will continue to grow as we release the final episodes over the next few weeks."
This week Where is Jón? took over the RTÉ.ie homepage as an extensive marketing campaign has been rolled out through our owned and paid media specifically outdoor advertising, digital audio and paid social media. In our commitment to the Irish Language Act, 1 in 5 outdoor advertising sites will be as Gaeilge.
Where is Jón? is written, reported and produced by Liam O’Brien and Anna Marsibil Clausen of RÚV Iceland. Original music soundtrack is performed and composed by Úlfur Eldjárn, with special guest Unnur Jónsdóttir on cello. Sound design is by Peadar Carney. Production assistance from Johannes Olafsson, Þorgerður E. Sigurðardóttir and the RTÉ Documentary On One team.
Episodes of Where is Jón? are available on the RTÉ Radio Player on iOS and Android, RTÉ.ie/whereisjon, or on Spotify and Apple Podcasts with new episodes publishing weekly on Mondays. Where is Jón is broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 on Saturday’s at 6pm.
