RTÉ’s Commitment to Quality Scripted Content

Scripted programming is the jewel in the crown for any content producer. A hard-hitting drama or hit comedy can define your station or platform. Programmes like these are the very foundation of watercooler moments all over the country.

RTÉ has had some of the top-rating drama and comedy programmes of the year so far. We’re bringing even more of these moments to screens in the coming months with thrilling dramas and hilarious comedies from some of the top talent in Ireland. With each of these properties comes the opportunity to promote your brand in a trusted and premium environment.

Drama

Striking Out was the number one drama programme so far this year with the top episode being watched by 515K Adults 15+. It was also the most streamed single episode of a drama on the RTÉ Player so far this year. This shows that there is a huge demand with Irish audiences for quality produced Irish drama across RTÉ’s AV platforms.

Knowing that audiences love premium Irish drama, RTÉ will be bringing Taken Down to RTÉ One later this year. This is a new series from the creators of Love/Hate set around a direct provision centre.  Another drama that we will see before the end of the year is Death & Nightingales, starring Jamie Dornan. This is a period piece set in Northern Ireland in 1885 following a young woman’s attempt to control her own destiny.

(Death & Nightingales)

The New Year brings Resistance, the follow-up to the hugely popular Rebellion, to screens. This series will focus on the War of Independence, this thriller set in Ireland in 1920, a time when everything is double, with opposing states working overtly and covertly to destabilise the other.

Comedy

(The Young Offenders)

Comedy on RTÉ is becoming a bigger part of the schedule. The Young Offenders was the most popular comedy show in the country by some distance so far this year. Its best episode had an audience of 450K, and it was wildly popular among the younger demographics. It also performed well on RTÉ Player with over a million streams.

Speaking of RTÉ Player, The Doireann Project which had a successful pilot on the RTÉ Player with over 100K streams is being brought back on RTÉ Player and RTÉ2 in the new season. Showing that RTÉ are listening to their audience needs and trends, by evolving to create bespoke shows for platforms outside of television.

(Women on the Verge)

RTÉ is adding to its comedy presence with three shows with strong female voices. Finding Joy, written by and starring Amy Huberman, which has recently announced F&F Exclusively at Tesco as its sponsor, follows a young woman as she is thrust into the limelight while trying to get over a painful break-up. Women on the Verge, written by the BAFTA award-winning Sharon Horgan, airs Thursday 11th October and is based on the novel by Lorna Martin who co-wrote the show. Podge and Rodge will be making their glorious return to our screens, with the woman of the hour Doireann Garrihy in tow, she'll be there to keep the boys in check!
