How Radio Complements Other Media to Shape the Day

Looking at how people access various media throughout the day tells a story of complimentarity and how your brand can maximise its impact across RTÉ.

Radio Landscape in Ireland

If the last few years in media have shown anything, it’s the resilience of radio in Ireland. 82% of Irish Adults listen to radio on Weekdays and even among the younger generation listenership remains strong at 76% of 15-24 year olds.

On average, Irish people spend over 4hrs listening to radio every day making it a huge part of Irish life. While streaming services like Spotify have grown in popularity, they remain under 5% of the total listening minutes, compared to 85% for radio. The truth is radio is still at the centre of the majority of Irish peoples’ media habits.

Where does RTÉ Radio fit into this

Of the radio stations, RTÉ Radio 1 is the only station with a Weekly reach of over one million Adults 15+. RTÉ Radio 1 has a loyal listenership which looks to it for breaking stories as well as opinions on the news of the day. RTÉ 2FM is the top station for 15-34 year olds with a 14.2% share.

RTÉ Radio is the first thing the Irish public turn to in the morning

Across the entirety of the show, Morning Ireland owns breakfast, with a reach of 438,000 making it the most listened to radio programme Ireland. It is the first thing that people turn to in the morning to catch up on the news of the day. Ryan Tubridy is also a big draw for audiences when he takes the reins from Morning Ireland at 9am with reach of 311,000.

Breakfast Republic is the most listened to programme for 15-34’s in the morning, with 77,000 of this demo tuning in each morning and 186,000 Adults 15+ listening to Jen, Bernard and Keith first thing every day.

Interestingly, radio consumption is the reverse of TV. While the radio peak is in the morning and stays pretty high until evening time, TV is the opposite. TV gradually builds throughout the day with a modest audience in the morning before growing in the afternoon, by the evening time TV is the strongest with shows like The Late Late Show, Fair City, The Rotunda and more bringing in big audiences.

Those that missed their favourite programmes on TV, catch up on RTÉ Player with over one third of all catch-up streams taking place the day after the original TX.

RTÉ.ie and the RTÉ News Now app provide updates for people throughout the working day, mobiles are popular in the day, with desktops dominating working hours unsurprisingly, while in the evening tablets see more use. RTÉ.ie is Ireland’s number one multi-media website with 6.8million monthly unique browsers. The RTÉ News Now app has 1.9m app downloads and keeps updates people with up-to-the-minute breaking news.

The RTÉ Guide remains Ireland's best selling magazine, reaching 383,000 people every week. This complements our TV and BVOD offering as people the RTÉ Guides loyal readership still choose their AV content using the Guide.

Throughout the day RTÉ is there for whatever the audience needs.

Capture Ears.

Capture Eyes.
